It’s all about defining what’s crossing the line. When it comes to disciplining students, teachers are meant to guide their students and be their role models. Children spend most of their early age in school, and in these crucial years, their mental and social capabilities are at their fullest potential for growth and development.
Sometimes things can get a little out of control when it comes to children, and teachers as adults should be well aware of that. While discipline is important, students should not be left to feel humiliated in front of others, especially in class. Unfortunately, it was not the case for one of the teachers.
At Dupont Tyler Middle School in Nashville, Tennessee, ten yearold Reagan Phillips was humiliated in front of her classmates after her teacher used duct tape to silence her in class. As the student was said to be talking too much, the child’s mother, Victoria Phillips, stated that the incident had left her furious.

I am angry, I am hurt and I am driven, said the mother about the incident that occurred. However, the mother admitted that her daughter indeed had a habit of talking a lot. She explained that her daughter talked a lot in class because she was very excited to learn new things.
She also claimed that Reagan often interrupted the class with her questions without raising her hand. However, to their defense, the mother stated she was working to resolve their concern with the teacher.
Still, Victoria felt what the teacher did was completely out of line. She was shocked by the incident that took place in class. Recalling how her daughter narrated the incident, the worried mother described how her daughter cried when she got home.
Victoria asked her daughter what happened and Reagan answered that her teacher had put duct tape on her mouth and then everyone laughed at her. Reagan continued, saying that she pulled the tape off and that was why her lip was bleeding.
A student from the class mentioned that the teacher was trying to get the class to be quiet and when Reagan was still talking, the teacher got out the tape from the desk and put it on Regan’s mouth. Another student from the class came to the support of the teacher student claimed that the teacher did it as a joke and said that there was no lack of respect towards her students.
Though the student said it was just a silly joke, the mother believed that it was still unacceptable. Victoria argued that their teacher publicly shamed her daughter. That messes with your life, she explained.

And then as a mother to protect it’s, like that messed up our trust. She felt like I knew about it and I allowed it to happen, said Victoria, enraged by the incident. The mother wanted the teacher to publicly apologize to her young daughter. I would like for her to make a public statement and a public apology to my daughter. She was humiliated, said the mother.
Meanwhile, the Metro Nashville public school authorities said that they expect their teachers and other employees to act professionally with the students. They also urge parents to act immediately if they have any complaints.
They also stated they would take action if there were any events against the code of conduct. The Department of child services looked into the complaint. However, it is not known as a teacher was held accountable.
When adults become parents, they develop a primal need to protect their children at all times. Whether it’s defending them physically looking out for their best interests by influencing their choices or monitoring what they’re exposed to on a daily basis.

Most of what they do is done with their best intentions at hearts which is why some parents can grow anxious when their babies go off to school. It’s a place where they have to entrust care of their children to someone else. Often strangers and just hope that their teachers can have a positive impact in their lives.
