Cincinnati – To celebrate the start of the Pisces season on February 19, PETA scoured the country for Best Faux Fish Dishes of 2021– and local vegan favorite ESSEN made a spot on the list with its Bagel & Lox bagel, which is slathered with vegan cream cheese and packed with pickled tomatoes, capers, onions and dill.
“ESSEN’s vegetarian take on the quick classic is the perfect fish-friendly way to celebrate the Pisces season,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “Every diner on the PETA list is causing a stir among visitors who consider fish to be very sensitive, worried about the health of our oceans and rivers, or simply want to lower their cholesterol levels.”
More fish are killed each year than all other animals combined. They slowly choke or die as they are dragged out of the oceans by huge nets, and the bellies of those who survive are cut open on the decks of fishing boats while they are still alive.
Anyone who goes vegan saves about 200 animals each year; reduces their risk of developing cancer, heart disease, strokes, diabetes and obesity; and may even help stave off future epidemics and pandemics, as SARS, swine flu, avian flu and COVID-19 all came about from keeping and killing animals for food.
Other winners on PETA’s list include Spicy Salmon from Old Abe & Co. from Rochester, Minnesota; tuna salad from Kindred in New Orleans; Fisch Fry Sandwich from Cheeze Factory in Baraboo, Wisconsin; and Phish & Chips from Earth Aloha Eats in Lahaina, Hawaii.
Each diner will receive a framed certificate from PETA, which offers lists of ready-to-reheat vegan seafood available in grocery stores and amazing vegan fish recipes on their website.
PETA, whose motto is in part that “animals are not ours to eat,” is opposed to arrogance, a worldview focused on human excellence. For more information please visit PETA.org or subscribe to the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram…
