Violent and unnecessary animal testing of cosmetics and personal care products has been going on for decades. Fortunately, in New York it would have banned the production and sale of animal-tested cosmetics across the state.
The cosmetics industry has capitalized on the suffering of animals to fuel its own growth in the consumer market. Inside these laboratories, small, defenseless animals such as rats, mice, rabbits and guinea pigs kept in cells until they are subjected to horrific and painful experiments that are outdated and ineffective.
Animals do not react to chemicals in the same way as humans. A chemical or product that is considered safe for mice, rabbits, or other animals may not be safe for human use.
Besides, United States Food and Drug Administration does not specifically require the use of animals to test cosmetics for safety, while the cosmetics industry already has safer and more reliable testing methods that do not harm innocent animals. Hundreds of companies that have pledged not to test on animals have already proven that there is no longer an acceptable reason for torturing animals because of our vanity.
