Oakland, Michigan. – PETA is offering rewards up to $ 5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction on charges of brutality of those responsible for the killing of about 20 swans since January in the Lake Makedi area.
All dead swans were found swimming in the lake or lying on the shore. An autopsy of one of them revealed that he was poisoned, possibly with antifreeze, and police believe the killings may be linked.
Police investigations have yet to reveal any leads, and PETA hopes the public will help solve the case before the new swans are killed. W
“These swans deserved a peaceful life with their families, but instead they most likely died in agony,” says PETA senior director Stephanie Bell. “PETA encourages anyone with information about this case to report it immediately before anyone gets hurt.”
PETA, whose motto is, “Animals are not ours to abuse,” notes that swans are protected by anti-cruelty laws, and offenders face jail time and heavy fines if convicted.
Tipsters should call the Report All Poaching Hotline at 800-292-7800.
