Circumstances lead Paige, a troubled teen, to give her newborn baby girl up for adoption. She runs into her daughter 18 years later and befriends her, hiding the hideous truth that she is her birth mother.
Paige loved to spend her evenings at the park. Watching little children running around, shouting and screaming, filled her heart with joy.
It also haunted her every time she recalled the circumstances that forced her to choose between her newborn baby and her future 18 years ago. She had envisioned a beautiful family, but it so happened that she ended up destroying it instead.
Paige, then 18, had given her newborn baby up for a closed adoption. Circumstances forced her to do it. It had been 18 dreaded years, and she did not know who adopted her baby and where she was taken.
“Will she look like Brad? Does she have my nose and eyes? Or Brad’s ears and curly hair?” Paige cried, lost in deep thought about the daughter she never got to cuddle with or hold to her heart’s content…
“Where has fate dragged me?” she asked herself. “At 36, my entire life is laughing back at me. I’m now happily married. I’ve learned to move on from an incomplete, dark chapter of my life. But why does it still haunt me? Is my daughter fine? Does she remember me?”
“I hate my mother. I think being born to her is the worst that could’ve happened to me.”
Paige often cursed herself for choosing her future over her daughter. She had given in to her parents’ threat when they told her they would stop supporting her if she wished to keep her newborn baby.
It was her baby from her unplanned pregnancy while dating her high school sweetheart, Brad. And he was of no help, either. He fled the city, cutting all contact with Paige as soon as she told him she was pregnant with their child. What a coward Brad was, Paige often frowned.
With a heavy heart, the mother put her newborn baby up for adoption a week after birth. She was devastated. Her conscience warned her to stop doing this to her child. But Paige went ahead, thinking it was her best decision to give her daughter a better life.
“God bless you wherever you go,” she dropped a kiss on her baby’s cheek 18 years ago before leaving the foster home. Paige had concealed her face so nobody would recognize her.
Paige moved on. She graduated, got a job, and married another man at 26. Life seemed blissful until her dark past flashed before her eyes. 36-year-old Paige snapped to her senses when she saw a young girl running toward her at the park that day.
What stunned Paige was the girl’s uncanny resemblance to her. It felt like she was looking at her younger self in the mirror. “How can that be? Who is this girl? Is she my…?” wondered Paige as the girl stopped just a few feet away, panting.
“Miss, did you see my dog? He ran off the leash. Did you see a white dog with black speckles on his face?” asked the girl. But Paige was stunned by the girl’s appearance, voice, and eyes.
“No, dear, I didn’t see your dog. What’s your name? Why don’t you sit down? You look tired,” said Paige, curious about the girl’s identity. The two talked for a few minutes, and it turned out the girl’s name was Amelia.
“I was wondering about something…Why do I get this strange feeling that I’d look like you when I grow older?!” laughed Amelia. “Isn’t it strange? I always wondered if I have a carbon copy, but I’m surprised to be sitting face to face with an older version of myself!”
Soon, Amelia found her dog and left the park. But before leaving, she told Paige that she would visit the park daily to walk her dog. This would give Paige enough opportunity to know more about the girl and find out who she was.
The next day, Amelia and Paige met again at the same spot at the park. They were glad, and after a warm conversation, Paige learned that the girl was adopted 18 years ago. Surprisingly, Amelia also knew all along that she was not her parents’ biological child.
“And this is me when I was a baby!” Amelia showed Paige an old photo.
Paige wanted to cry. She wanted to scream “Sorry!” a million times. She realized Amelia was her daughter, who she had abandoned 18 years ago. It hurt her even more whenever the girl talked ill about her birth mother. Amelia was unaware she was sharing her negative opinions of her mother with her mother.
“…And I’ll be going to college in another two months. I love my parents for agreeing to send me there though it’s pretty far from here,” laughed Amelia. Then, that laughter turned into a wicked grin when she started talking about her birth mother.
“I hate that woman. I mean, how can a mother leave her newborn baby? What was so important to her than me? If she didn’t want to have a child, she shouldn’t have gotten pregnant in the first place. But I’m glad I found love and protection from my adoptive parents. I love them,” declared Amelia, shattering Paige’s heart.
Although she wanted to confess the truth, Paige did not dare to do it. But during their next meeting, she could no longer hold back the truth after witnessing Ameilia’s intense hatred for her.
“Sweetheart, maybe you haven’t got the full picture yet. Your mother could’ve struggled so much and been forced to give you up. Maybe she wanted you to have a better future…you may never know,” said Paige when Amelia once again started cursing her mother.
“I disagree. I never asked for this, and it was her stupid mistake to become pregnant. I am not a symbol of her stupidity, and I’m not garbage she could just discard. I was her daughter…her flesh and blood. I think being born to her is the worst that could’ve happened to me,” fumed Amelia.
Paige was hurt beyond words could express. Tears rushed into her eyes as she buried her face in her palms and began to cry inconsolably. Amelia was bewildered and did not understand why Paige burst into tears after listening to her story.
“Please, darling…It’s enough. I never thought you were garbage. I was forced to leave you…not that I didn’t love or need you,” sobbed Paige, alarming Amelia.
“Wh-what do you mean? Who are you?”
“I’m your mother—the mother who abandoned you 18 years ago,” exclaimed Paige.
Amelia turned red with fury. She grabbed her jacket and got up to leave, only to be stopped by her mother.
“Please, honey. You don’t know everything. Please give me just one chance to explain everything,” begged Paige.
“Explain everything? And stop calling me honey. I hate you. Get away from me. You are the cruelest mother I’ve ever seen.”
Paige blocked Amelia’s way and somehow convinced her to sit and listen to her fully…
“Your father and I were never married. I was blindly in love with him and was the happiest when I got pregnant,” confessed Paige.
“My parents threatened to withdraw all support. I had my whole future staring back at me. At the same time, I wanted to give birth to you. I put you up for adoption because I wanted you to have a good life somewhere. My conscience killed me when I left you, but I had no choice. I didn’t want you to grow into a troubled teenager like me.”
“But why didn’t you fight to keep me instead? Was your future so much more important than your baby?” retorted Amelia.
“I sacrificed my motherhood for both our futures. I moved on and married another man. But till now, I chose not to have another child. Because I still love you! My husband Ronald knows every bit of my dark past, and he supports my decision. Please forgive me for leaving you, darling. I was forced to do that. I had no choice.”
Amelia’s anger melted into tears as soon as she heard this. She realized she had wrongly perceived her mother all these years and dropped to her knee in tears.
“I’m sorry! I didn’t know that you…But I cannot leave the mother who raised me for you. I cannot forgive you so easily, but I will because you went through so much already,” she stammered.
Paige and Amelia hugged each other, shedding tears of joy that day. They often met at the park and promised each other they would remain best friends forever. Amelia was happy about reconciling with her birth mother, but she and Paige agreed only to be friends.
What can we learn from this story?
- Do not judge someone without knowing the truth. Amelia hated her mother and talked ill of her for abandoning her. She did not know about the circumstances that led her mother to make such a hasty decision.
- A great family builds on love and trust, not threats and betrayal. Paige’s parents threatened to withdraw support if she wished to keep the baby. Her boyfriend dumped her and ran away when she revealed she was pregnant with his child. Trapped between her future and newborn baby, Paige gave her baby up, and the beautiful family she envisioned crumbled.
