A similar situation led to comedic jokes in the classic Christmas movie. But when a cat named Pearl was left alone at home after her guardian, a war veteran, was unexpectedly taken to the hospital with a serious illness, no one laughed – least of all she.
Like a bewildered Kevin McCallister in Alone at homePearl must have wondered if she had somehow made her guardian disappear. Why else would he have left her alone?
Pearl didn’t have to fend off a couple of inept burglars, but she had to wrestle with bowls of food and water that emptied as quickly as her litter box.
Several days passed before the elderly mother of her mistress, who lives far away, realized that Pearl was stuck in an empty house, and there was no one to take care of her. Concerned about her illness, she called PETA for help. We immediately dispatched field investigators to this man’s home in Virginia to feed Pearl and empty her overflowing litter box.
Pearl was as happy as a child at Christmas, seeing people for the first time in days, and rewarded our field explorers with ecstatic purrs and ankle rubbing. We were ready to visit the lonely cat as many times as necessary, but then we received the news that her guardian would be hospitalized indefinitely and would no longer be able to take care of her. It was then that his family came to the painful realization that Pearl would need to adopt a new family so that she could not be left at home alone forever.
Now all Pearl needs is a special person to give her the Hollywood ending she craves so much. Are you ready to turn your world into her oyster? Take your shell phone and write to us at [email protected]…
