A recently leaked video shows a man identified as Salisbury, North Carolina, a police officer lifts a K9 named Zuul off the ground on a leash, tosses the dog over his shoulder, pulls him in this “choke hold” several feet, body slapping. he leaned towards the police car, violently pushing it, and then into the car, and, in the last manifestation of ill will towards the faithful dog, which dutifully accepts all these insults with obvious learned helplessness, hit Zuul with force.
The video footage shows people in another police car with a camera filming the incident. One says: “We’re fine; there are no witnesses. ” Then someone chuckles. Then one asks: “Is your camera turned on?” and the answer is: “No, my power is off.” Then someone says, “I think mine is on,” and then they say, “Can you go and turn off my cameras? Front camera only. ” Terrible, but no one tried to stop the violence. …
Dogs go out of their way to please and understand what is required of them, and they are extremely loyal. The dog abuse in the video is a violation of that trust and, according to PETA, North Carolina law. The police department claims to be investigating the incident and “administratively separated” Zuul from the rule-breaking, but claims it is a “personnel issue” and that “[K9] training tactics and corrective actions can sometimes be alarming [when provided] out of context. ” There is no scenario in which the behavior of this handler could be considered acceptable by any standard, and we believe that this is much more than an internal disciplinary issue: it is criminal behavior. Moreover, witnesses who took no action and actually participated in covering up this incident are also responsible for the suffering of this dog.
Removing Zuul from the care of a guide is just the first step. Given the apparent protection and agreement of the police chief with this abuse, it seems that the department’s K9 unit should be fully protected. to prevent such brutality from happening again. We sent a letter to the Chief of Police, which you can read here, but Salisbury City Council has the power to vacate block K9… If you agree with us, send a message to the council members.
